I'm trying to spray paint a top hat green for a costume... but its being absorbed into the hat? Suggestions?

I'm being a leprechaun, but I couldnt find any green hats. So I bought a black one and planned on spray painting it green. Right now the spray paint is sticking only to little fuzzy bits and otherwise being absorbed into the hat. The hat is made of a stiff cloth material.

Would spraying it with a clear matte first help the green spray paint to stick? Any other suggestions?

Thanks : )I'm trying to spray paint a top hat green for a costume... but its being absorbed into the hat? Suggestions?
green silky fabric, cut to fit the hat and use the spray glue to stick it on. It won't need the edges finished as the wear won't be that much.I'm trying to spray paint a top hat green for a costume... but its being absorbed into the hat? Suggestions?
It sounds like the fabric is very absorbent, like nylon or polyester perhaps. I would recommend coating it with something before painting. Try going to your local craft store and see what they recommend. It is also possible that the fabric you are trying to paint simply will not hold that paint. You might need to try a different kind of paint.
You have to paint it with a primer first, or some other sealer.

Let it dry thoroughly. Maybe it has absorbed enough paint by now that it will turn a nice green with the next coat.

If that doesn't work, try a primer.
buy a green hat,or bleach it first so its not black any more wash it then dye it green with clothing dye, then wash it a couple of times in cold water, so your hair and forhead doesnt turn green.
May be worth making a solution of 1 part pva glue to 1 part water, paint that on and leave it to dry, then try spray painting again.
try getting a thicker paint and also you can try to cover the hat with a thin layer or cement glue before you spray it
Cover it in green construction paper, or even use paper mach茅 and spray paint that (put the mach茅 over the hat).
I reckon spray it with vanish first or some other waterproof spray before hand then try spraying it again.
Don't use paint they have dyes for clothes use that and put what you want green in the wash with the dye
