When i use spray paint to spray plastic, it comes out really dull.?

im spraying some of the plastic fairing on my motorcycle, i did a test bit, and it came out really dull and non reflective, unlike the original paint on my bike which was very shiny.

what spray paint do i use to make plastics look shiny and give a reflection?

its black paint i want if that makes any difference.

Thanks. When i use spray paint to spray plastic, it comes out really dull.?
Krylon's fusion shiny black...krylon shiny clear over what you have already painted may help. When i use spray paint to spray plastic, it comes out really dull.?
try using the krylon fushion paint. its a spraypaint specially formulated for painting on plastic objects. it adheres well and it should giv you the shine that you desire.
You might need a primer to fix the surface of the plastic before you spray it with a shiny coat.
Coat it when your done with Krylon gloss clear coat
Hi Rachel,

First let me say that I live in Portugal and we have a much smaller choice of products, namely sprays, than USA.

In fact I don't know any spray here that can be applied directly to plastic without an adhesion primer.

Now, the first thing to know is the kind of plastic you're going to work on since some may even contain rests of the demolding (sp?) agent which can cause negative reactions to the paint, like the called ';fish eyes'; due to grease.

If the plastic is ABS type, then it's problematic since even many adhesion promoters won't work.

Anyway, lets suppose it's not.

Mind that I'm supposing that you're going to paint directly over plastic and not over paint that is already there.

So, the first thing is to gently ';sand'; the surface with a scuff pad such as 3M scotch brite 7448.

Then one must degrease the surface. There are degreasing agents for plastic, but you can use rubbing alchool.

Let the alchool evaporate completely.

If you're using a suitable paint for plastic like Krylon's Fusion paint, just go ahead an apply it. Otherwise you'll have to apply an adhesion promoter for plastics such as 3M's 5917 (I guess this is the correct reference) There's also 150 Terokal by Teroson (Henkel).

Usually one can paint about 20 minutes after applying the primer. One should not wait much longerthan 30 minutes since it's important to have a bond between the primer and the paint.

One observation : between the plastic primer and the paint, one can apply a regular acrylic primer to contribute to a more solid surface, however the coats should be thin, for we're talking about flexible parts and the thicker the layers the more prone they are to crack.

Now, you say that your paint is comming out dull. Are you sure that you didn't buy a satin black ?

When using a spray one must shake the can well and aplly thin layers, usually with intervals of 10 to 15 minutes.

Do not apply a coat after 1 hour, for insteance because the solvent may affect the previous layer that is still curing.

Usually the last layer is more heavy being very important the balance between the quantity of sprayed paint and not letting it run.

If the paint runs and you're on the first layer, just clean it.

If you're already on the second or third (usually final) layer, don't rub it. Let it dry from one day to the other. Then sand the runned bit, degrease and repaint.

Good luck.

Kind regards,
