Can you spray paint over rust?

I've got an older black mazda protege and it has a few small rust spots but they stick out like a sore thumb, can i just touch them up with some black spray paint? Keep in mind this is just a work car.Can you spray paint over rust?
The rust will flake off and take the paint with it. You need to use a wire brush to get rid of the flaky rust, then 36 grit sandpaper to get down to good, bare metal. If you get MOST of the rust off, you can use naval jelly to convert the rest.

Next, clean the bare metal really, really well. Use water, followed by isopropal alcohol (it will evaporate fast so you have dry metal to paint).

Spray on a quality spray primer, sand it smooth, and then cover with paint. Duplicolor should match your car's color well enough so that the repair won't be too noticeable. Can you spray paint over rust?
Oxidization will be arrested but not for long, as the moisture i.e: humidity, rain will come in from behind the sheet metal body panel and, the rust will just come through the paint. Maybe try a little (fine grit) wet sandpaper, that black sandpaper used for fiberglass boat surfaces.

Find Mazda's black paint, for another auto manufacturer's paint may not have the same colour match.

Yes, I said the oxidation(rust) comes in from inside out on the painted car's surface,
yea, but the metal will keep rusting and then rust away.

my dad bought an old 4runner back then, the previous owner painted over the rust. it was okay when my dad bought it. but a few months later, it was a complete rust bucket at the bottom of the front doors and the top of the tailgate.
Give it some tremclad, give it some TLC, it's like stroking on the sunshine, right over the rust...

Seriously? You think that will prevent the rust to continue? What a fantastic idea! Auto body shops will make a ******* fortune dude...

yea you can i would sit around one day with beer in hand and just try to sand away the rust then paint it black

no need for preimer and all that if its just a work car

take your time and enjoy the day and beer in hand

hope this helps
Ya you can do that,But there still going to stick out %26amp; it will still keep rusting. If you want to do it right you need to sand out the rust then paint over it.Done right it wont look bad.
There are paints that are supposed to neutralize rust or you could sand down the rust and prime and paint it. They are both pretty cheap options that work rather well.
you can but the rust will just come back through again.
